Best analysis of the speech so far

What Obama Really Said Last Night
By John R. Guardiano on 12.2.09 @ 6:07AM

Last night, President Obama delivered an historic speech to the nation and to the world on his plans for Afghanistan. Here, in sum, is what the president said:

I really don't want to be commander-in-chief, but I'll do it if I have to -- at least for a little while, and then we'll see. Just so long as it doesn't cost too much, or take too long, or interfere with my plans to nationalize healthcare and fundamentally change America.

We Americans didn't ask for this war; and God knows I didn't either. But I'll certainly make sure we end this war, and soon. I have bigger fish to fry, after all. This war is a distraction from my domestic left-wing agenda and my need to bring "change" to America.

So Afghanis, get your act together. We'll help you for the next 18 months or so and then we're hightailing it out of here. I have to worry about other threats and other dangers. And, most importantly, I have to worry about healthcare and "change."

Yes, I know our soldiers and marines inspire confidence, while conveying an indomitable can-do spirit. But chalk that up to the naivety of youth.

I myself never served in the military, but let me tell you: These guys -- and especially the marines -- are a little nuts. I mean, they're all volunteers; they all believe deeply in America -- and in America as it is, and not in America as I will soon remake it -- and they all have this touching but wild-eyed optimism in America's ability to change the world.

But hey, I'm the president. I can't be swayed by the young idealists and optimists who enlist in and join the U.S. military. And you Afghanis shouldn't take our young people too seriously either. I don't care how much they help you and how much you come to like and admire them. They're all (well most of them anyhow) callow youth who fail to see the bigger picture.

The reality is that America can only do so much. Never mind that we put a man on the moon. Some things are just beyond our capacity; and helping your government and your people enter the 17th Century may be more than we Americans can handle. It's certainly more than I want to handle. What can I say? Life's tough. Deal with it.

Anyway, I have to get back to healthcare and domestic change. As I say, you have 18 months. Use it and lose it, Mohammed. Hopefully that'll be enough time for things to work out in your favor. If not, well, I'm sorry. At least everyone will know that we tried, and I can escape blame for losing. Later.

  1. He is sending 30,000 troops but the fact of the matter is, he is fucked either way. The conservatives are going to say he is not sending enough, the liberals will say it is too much. The guy will be crucified no matter what he says or does...

And I still have yet to see what is wrong with wanting an end date. I really could not give a hit what happens to Afghanistan, or the entire friggin Middle East for that matter!!!

(you know this is your baby sister, right?!? I just don't want any crazy Republicans stalking me!!!) :-)

  2. And the economy IS friggin IMPORTANT!!! We are drowning in debt, a lot of which was brought on by the "war"...

  3. And it is amazing to me that people want to slam him for wanting to put an 18 month time limit on it, when we have been there for, what, EIGHT FREAKIN YEARS?!?!?!

  4. No, the debt of both wars combined has had very little to do with the financial nightmare we face now. And the cost of two wars over eight years is far less than Obama has spent in the 9 months he has been in office. Don't get me starte donthat shit....and even though he darn sure didn't start it (I sent Bush an earful when he signed that TARP crap, let me tell ya) Obama has quadrupled it in 6 months, with no end in sight.

Anyway, it's obvious he doesn't support this war. That is certainly his right.

What is disgusting to me about him is that instead of saying, look, we're pulling out, and taking the heat he'd get for that, he is dragging it out.

He shouldn't CARE that he is fucked either way; he should do what he thinks is the right thing to do, not try to appease!!! Bush didn't care how bad his poll numbers were, or what people thought. He did what he thought he should do.

Obama doesn't have the guts to do that fully. He is a morally corrupt coward.

Having said that, I'd say he has done a very good job as far as keeping up with the drone attacks, and the pressure on Pakistan to clean their own house.

The issue we have with the 18 month time limit chicky is towfold; first, you don't just drop 30,000 troops into theatre overnight; it'll take darn near 18 months to even get them all there...and then they turn around and leave again?

Secondly, it is suicide to announce to the enemy when you're leaving. Stupid, plain and simple. And why will any allies step up when they know we're bailing???

It took years to get Iraq straightened out...and they are a modern society. Afghanistan will take far longer than that, and Obambi doesn't have the stomach for it. Which is fine, but he out to grow a pair and admit it.

And yes, I can tell it's you, sweetie!! Thanks for coming by!!! Get another Gmail addie, girl, so you don't have to leave your blog name here!!! There are freaks from both sides out there, I can assure you of that!
